JumpButton in The Age newspaper…

It's been some time since issue one came out, but it continues to make a name for itself…
This weekend's A2 section of The Age newspaper will feature an article on competitive gaming and its sociological impact, written by Dr Brett Hutchins (an author and a lecturer in new media at Monash University). A number of paragraphs in the piece reference JumpButton and a discussion I had with Brett one night about gaming culture. It's a great read, well worth looking out for, and Brett's insight into the industry is full of candour and perception.
In other news, JumpButton was recently approached by Monument (a design and architecture magazine) which is holding an independent magazine exhibition at Federation Square in Melbourne in mid July. The Q&A, which I filled out last weekend, looks at the tumultuous (but rewarding!) experience of putting together an independently published magazine. More details will be posted closer to the time.

God the illustration accompanying the article is terrible!

I learned of JumpButton through the article in the A2 today (24/06/06). I am overjoyed to find that such a magazine does exist; I long harboured a dream to write in a videogaming-based magazine, but have recently become highly disilluioned with the average gaming-magazine, filled with “bikini-babes, trash-talk [and] smug, self-satisfied editorials”[1]. Your magazine appears to me as a breath of fresh air in a stale landscape; an intelligent analysis of videogaming and its ability to impact, influence, inspire. The recognition that games do cause an emotional impact is one that not many public figures acknowledge. Your work is to be celebrated.
I have, you might have guessed, never seen a copy of JumpButton anywhere at all.
I would be most grateful if you could email me a list of prospective purchase locations in Victoria, since your magazine looks precisely like the kind I should seek gainful employment at once I have completed tertiary education. (I am sorry to hear issue 2 never made it to print. Commiserations on that point.)
Many thanks for website and your feature, and congratulations on the latter.
Sincerely,
Robert Grey (online surname only).

Cam: Yes it is. I’m not sure they knew what to illustrate the piece with. If you look at the caption for the JumpButton spread, it labels it as a magazine that ‘investigates computerised games’ effects on society’. I’m not quite sure I’d want the magazine to be tagged quite like that! :)

Rob: Thanks! The magazine was actually launched late last year. I will be putting some pay-pal links on this site (on the ‘issue one’ page, or maybe into the sidebar), but until then email me at the address listed in the footer and we can make arrangements for you to get a copy.

Cheers,

Drew (editor)

G’day. I also learned about this mag through the Age’s A2 section. Good to see.

Hey, Carol. Great to hear! Hope you enjoy the site/blogazine.

As a mini-FYI, new articles go up every 4-5 days and the design of the site will be constantly upgrading. (Most notably on weekends!)

What were your thoughts on Brett’s article, btw?

Ah, well actually I don’t remember all of it, but I think he was saying that the culture around games will get deeper as time goes by. He critisized most games mags as being too smug and focussed on digital t & a, and mentioned that this one was differnt.
