JumpButton ‘live’

This is the beginning of a new era for JumpButton magazine.
Originally conceived as an art/gaming/lifestyle print magazine, issue one was distributed nationally through major newsagencies, art and design bookshops, galleries and Borders book stores. Now, JumpButton is in the process of being launched as an online community site, allowing a level of interaction and fluidity not possible with a print-based quarterly publication.
By Monday 12 June 2006, the first few articles from issue two will be ‘live’. Additional articles will be added every few days for the next three months, then, at the start of September, issue three will begin. As a homage to the quarterly nature of the original print concept, every three months a new issue will be added.

Where can we buy issue 1 of the mag? And also is there anywhere that you are going to put some of the art from the second issue?

Good luck with the site, I am excited to see what it can become.

Hey Charlie,

Thanks for being the first to comment! I do believe a copy of the magazine is already winging its way to you, but you raise a good point. A new page has been added to this site, outlining some of what went on with issue one. (The link is located in the top right of the header image.) Over the next couple of days I’ll add paypal links and some of the page layout spreads, so copies of issue one can purchased online.

Stick around, there’s some pretty special articles and art for issue two set to go ‘live’ very soon.

Cheers,

YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYA!!!

(Wizard needs food badly!)

Will you be doing any reviews of games/platforms etc…on here Drew?

Hey Cam,

Short answer: nope. This blogozine (is that even a word?) will be pretty much the online equivalent of the print magazine. All the culture, art and thought-provoking goodness, and none of the ‘news’ items or paint-by-score reviews. There are plenty of great magazines and news-style blogs that can take care of those.

To be fair, part of that decision is now also due to the fact that I recently took a job in the corporate side of the games industry, and wouldn’t want there to be any conflicts of interest. Any piece that may wander near that line will be written by someone other than myself; or was actually written by me prior to taking on my new job.

Of course, my first love is gaming and the culture… so if it’s cool, it’ll be here.

Cheers,

This is awesome Drew.

I just finished reading Issue 1 and thought I’d check back here to see if you have any more spreads up for Issue 2 and what do I find?

It’s a pity that you’re going to inevitably going to lose some of the artistic atmosphere when going from print to online, but with the ridiculous printing costs in Australia I’d much rather have an online jumpbutton than none at all!

Keep up the good work! I’ve added this to my feeds, so I’ll be checking back with every update :)

Hey James,

Thanks! Glad you like the mag, and pleased that you found your way here!

To be honest, you’re right. The online component won’t be quite as impressive as the print-based spreads I’ve already prepared for issue two. But to let the proverbial cat out of the bag, my intention is to still do some print-based stuff in addition to this online site. At this stage I’ve got two thoughts:

1: build up an online community around issue two (and issue three, etc.) and then publish a pre-ordered print magazine, which would include articles from this site *and* exclusive print-based articles and art.

Or, 2: I have some ideas for JumpButton *special editions*. Print-based magazines that focus on a particular theme, style or topic. I’d look at doing them as a pre-order (you might get an exclusive JumpButton t-shirt or similar) and selected retail outlet. Actually, thinking about it, I may well do the t-shirt for an issue two pre-order. (I’m currently working on some designs.)

Well, thanks again.

Cheers,

Drew (editor)
